ART BY TELEPHONE / ART BASEL MIAMI 2010

Each artist is asked to send the materials necessary to produce their piece, the contents of which are only revealed at the start of a Skype videoconference between the artist, wherever they may be, and the two curators, at the exhibition site. Live, in front of the audience the curators then construct the works or performances from the instructions given by the artists. They are not restricted in medium or nature of the work.

The origin of this practice began in 1922 with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, who gave instructions to a worker via telephone, in order to demostrate that the intellectual value of an artwork was not inferior to its emotional value. The inherent problematics remain pertinent, issues raised in re-exercising Art By Telephone address questions tied to the interpretation of art, of gesture, of the gap between mind and matter, insomuch as to the limits and possibilities of communication and language today. ABT, through an uninhibited process, displays the activity of creation, from the conception of the idea seen to the end to the reception. By presenting a selection of Berlin artists, ABT also supports the dynamism present in a new contemporary scene, using the means and mediums within it.

DURATION Each artist will be given a designated time slot, between 5-15 minutes. The performances do not need to be consecutive and can be divided over a larger period of time.
